(2 of 2) The most superior portion of the lesser peritoneal sac is called the superior recess of the lesser peritoneal sac. Confirm that the caudate lobe of the liver projects into this recess. To the left, inspect another extension of the lesser peritoneal sac known as the splenic recess. It extends to the hilum of the spleen and is enclosed between the lienorenal ligament and gastrolienal ligament. An inferior recess (if present) is located between the layers of greater omentum.
