Step 10. The Duodenojejunal Flexure

Retract the transverse colon superiorly and identify the duodenojejunal flexure. The duodenum is the first part of the small intestine. At this point, the ascending part of the duodenum emerges from the retroperitoneal space to become continuous with the jejunum, which is the second part of small intestine.

Observe the peritoneal fold that is attached to the superior aspect of duodenojejunal flexure. It is called the suspensory ligament of duodenojejunal flexure (suspensory ligament of Treitz). Muscle fibers from the right crus of the diaphragm are sometimes
included in this ligament, thereby forming the suspensory muscle of Treitz.
