Two other important gutters are located on either side of the mesentery of the small intestine. The right paramesenteric gutter is an enclosed space bordered by the transverse mesocolon, cecum, ascending colon and root of the mesentery. The left paramesenteric gutter is an open space which also communicates inferiorly with the pelvic cavity.
The paracolic and paramesenteric gutters are clinically important, because they are potential pathways for free blood, pus, gastric fluids and gas to track from one abdominal space into another and to the pelvic cavity.Links and References:
