Identify the epiploic foramen (of Winslow) which lies posterior to the free edge of the lesser omentum. Clean and identify the structures that lie in the free margin of the lesser omentum (also called the hepatoduodenal ligament). The common bile duct lies further to the right in the free margin of the lesser omentum. To the left, identify the proper hepatic artery. Both of these structures pass anterior to the portal vein.
