The junction between the stomach and duodenum is a narrowed opening surrounded by a smooth muscle sphincter, called the pyloric sphincter. The lumen of the pyloric sphincter is called the pyloric canal. It opens into the duodenum through the pyloric orifice [probe passes through the orifice and into the duodenum].
