On the visceral surface of the liver, identify the three fissures which divide it into lobes (Figure 38.4B):

• right sagittal fissure, bounded by the inferior vena cava posteriorly and the gallbladder anteriorly
• left sagittal fissure, bounded by the ligamentum venosum posteriorly and the ligamentum teres anteriorly
• transverse fissure or porta hepatis, penetrated by the right and left hepatic artery , common hepatic duct and its left and right branches and the portal vein and its branches.
