Identify the intestinal arteries, which are branches of the superior mesenteric artery. The arteries supply the jejunum and ileum by a series of anastomotic arterial loops or arcades (Figure 39.1). Confirm that the number of arterial arcades increases from the jejunum to the ileum. Typically, in the jejunum, there is one level of arterial arcades with long intestinal branches. In the ileum, there are four to five levels of arterial arcades with short intestinal branches (increased arborization). Along with an increase in the number of arterial arcades, note that there is an increase in the amount of fat in the distal portion of the mesentery.
