The renal arteries are located posterior to the renal veins. Cut the left renal vein, then reflect it together with the inferior vena cava to expose the renal arteries . The most posterior structures in the hilum are the ureter and the renal pelvis (Figure 40.3).

The relationship of the major structures at the hilum of the kidney is fairly consistent and important to emphasize. The renal vein is most anterior, the ureter and renal pelvis are most posterior, and the renal artery lies between them.
