On the anterior surface of the psoas major muscle, attempt to identify the psoas minor muscle. It is a small muscle with a long tendon that attaches to the iliopubic eminence. It is absent in about 50% of individuals.
The quadratus lumborum muscle
arises from the iliac crest and inserts on the transverse processes of the lumbar vertebrae and twelfth rib. The transversus abdominis muscle extends laterally from the quadratus lumborum muscle as one of the three major muscles forming the lateral abdominal wall.
