(1 of 3) Retract the internal iliac artery to identify its anterior division and posterior division (Figure 43.7).
Next, identify the branches of the posterior division of the internal iliac artery:
- iliolumbar artery supplies the iliacus muscle and gives lumbar branches to the posterior abdominal wall
- lateral sacral artery passes along the lateral border of the sacrum
- superior gluteal artery passes between the lumbosacral trunk and the first spinal nerve through the greater sciatic foramen and enters the gluteal region.
