Step 10. Branches of Internal Iliac Artery

Retract the internal iliac artery to identify its anterior division and posterior division (Figure 44.6).

First, identify the branches of the posterior division of the internal iliac artery:
  • iliolumbar artery, supplying the iliacus muscle and giving the lumbar branches to the posterior abdominal wall
  • lateral sacral artery, passing along the lateral border of the sacrum
  • superior gluteal artery, passing between the lumbosacral trunk and the first spinal nerve and entering the gluteal region
