(1 of 3) Retract the internal iliac artery to identify its anterior division and posterior division (Figure 44.6).
First, identify the branches of the posterior division of the internal iliac artery:
- iliolumbar artery, supplying the iliacus muscle and giving the lumbar branches to the posterior abdominal wall
- lateral sacral artery, passing along the lateral border of the sacrum
- superior gluteal artery, passing between the lumbosacral trunk and the first spinal nerve and entering the gluteal region
