Pelvic Relaxation and Urinary Incontinence

 

APGO Educational Objectives

Rationale: Patients with conditions of pelvic relaxation and urinary Incontinence present in a variety of ways. The physician should be familiar with the types of pelvic relaxation and Incontinence and the approach to management of these patients. 

The student will demonstrate a knowledge of the following: 

  1. Predisposing risk factors for pelvic organ prolapse and incontinence 
  2. Anatomic changes, fascial defects and neuromuscular pathophysiology 
  3. Signs and symptoms of pelvic organ prolapse 
  4. Physical exam 
    1. Cystocele 
    2. Rectocele 
    3. Enterocele 
    4. Vaginal vault or uterine prolapse 
  5. Methods of diagnosis: 
    1. Urine culture 
    2. Post-void residual 
    3. Cystoscopy 
    4. Urodynamic testing 
  6. Nonsurgical and surgical treatments including: 
    1. Pessary 
    2. Medications 
    3. Reconstructive surgery
