18. Spleno-portogram, AP projection

To produce this study a percutaneous injection of intravascular-type contrast is made into the splenic pulp. This results in visualization of the splenic and portal veins. The confluence points of the superior and inferior mesenteric veins can be identified, although the blood in these vessels has not been opacified.

For the most part this examination has been superceded by newer imaging modalities, and is presented here mainly as an anatomic review. (See also image #19, superior mesenteric venogram).
