7. Colon barium enema, PA prone projection

Air and a small volume of dense barium were introduced per rectum and they traveled in a retrograde direction to visualize the colon for this double contrast barium enema. A balloon in the rectal catheter is inflated with air during the study to prevent reflux of the air and barium. Filling of the (vermiform) appendix with barium and/or reflux of contrast material into the terminal ileum are indications that the entire colon has been visualized.
