16. Paranasal sinuses radiograph, lateral projection

In this view there is superimposition of the paired maxillary sinuses and of the paired groups of ethmoid air cells. Note that the roof of the maxillary sinus is the floor of the orbit. Note also that the floor of the maxillary sinus is contiguous with the roots of the upper jaw premolars and molars, so pain from one region can be referred to the other, and infection can track from one to the other. In this patient the third upper molar appears impacted, i.e., its complete and normal eruption seems unlikely due to its position against the second molar.
