The foramen ovale transmits the mandibular division of cranial nerve V. The foramen spinosum contains the middle meningeal artery. The carotid canal transmits not only the internal carotid artery, but sympathetic nerves as well. The jugular foramen carries the internal jugular vein, and cranial nerves IX, X, and XI. The hypoglossal canal transmits cranial nerve XII, and the foramen magnum allows passage of the spinal cord and vertebral arteries.
