11. R. knee CT #2, axial plane

(See also Image #10 - CT of the R. knee #1)

The menisci are C-shaped lamellae of fibrocartilage. The outer border of each is attached to the capsule; it's thick and convex. The inner border of each meniscus is its free edge, and it is thin and concave. The upper surface of each is concave, and in contact with the articular cartilage of the femoral condyle. The lower surface is flat, and in contact with the articular cartilage of the tibial condyle.

The medial meniscus is nearly semicircular, and the lateral one nearly circular. The medial meniscus is 5 to 15 times more likely to be torn or displaced than the lateral one since most abnormal forces in knee trauma are applied to the lateral knee, violently separating the medial femoral and tibial condyles.

The pes anserinus comprises the expanded tendons of the sartorius, gracilis and semitendinosus muscles at the medial border of the tibial tuberosity.
