18. Arteriogram — leg

The anterior tibial artery turns forward above the interosseous membrane and descends through the extensor compartment of the leg. It continues as the dorsalis pedis artery (not visualized) over the tarsal bones. This artery enters the sole of the foot between the first and second metatarsals.

The posterior tibial artery, a direct continuation of the popliteal artery, descends in the flexor compartment of the leg to the medial malleolus. Its main branch is the peroneal (fibular) artery, which descends behind the interosseous ligament at the medial aspect of the fibula. The posterior tibial artery divides into medial and lateral plantar arteries (not visualized), which anastomose with the dorsalis pedis artery.
